Jan. 4, 2017 — About Time...

As we begin a brand new year together, here are a couple of thoughts to ponder on the subject of time. We understand that our lives come to us second by second. God, however, does not exist within time in the same way. When Jesus said, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Revelation 22:13), He meant that all of time and eternity rests within Him. He did not mean that we should limit our understanding of Him as if He were bound to walk through time like we do, in a straight line.

Two things strike me about this:

First, let’s say that we are all praying to the Lord at 6:30 a.m. God is not bound to hear those prayers in the little slice of time that we call "6:30 a.m." C. S. Lewis reminds us in Mere Christianity that 6:30 a.m. and “…every other moment from the beginning of the world – is always Present for Him.” In this way (and thinking of his own wartime experience), Lewis continued, “[God] … has all eternity in which to listen to the split second of prayer put up by a pilot as his plane crashes…”

Second, this means that God has all the time in the world for you. Lewis wrote, “God is not hurried along in the Time-stream of this universe any more than an author is hurried along in the imaginary time of his own novel. He has infinite attention to spare for each of us. He does not have to deal with us in the mass. You are as much alone with Him as if you were the only being He ever created. When Christ died, He died for you individually just as much as if you had been the only person in the world.”

And in exactly this way Jude could pray, “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of His glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.”  (Jude 24-25)

I pray that as you come to Him today you would know that this day, this month, this year, every year and into eternity, Jesus has all the time in the world for you!
