Stephen Ministry is a caring ministry in which Christian men and women are trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, aging, chronic or terminal illness, relocation, miscarriage or infertility, or separation. Stephen Ministry is confidential ministry: The identity of those receiving care and what takes place in each caring relationship remains completely confidential.
A Stephen Minister (lay caregiver) is:
- a person with a passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need;
- a person with gifts for caregiving who has received 50 hours of training in providing emotional and spiritual care;
- a caring Christian friend who listens, cares, prays, supports and encourages; and
- someone who will "be there" for his or her care receiver, meeting faithfully for about an hour each week.
