Week 4: Love

Guide for Families

Advent Guide Activity:

Say: The best way to show love for someone is to pray for them, and we are going to do that together as a family today!

Do: Walk up and down your street or neighborhood, and pray for the people inside.  Do they have a need? Ask God to help them.  Are they lonely?  Ask God to help them find community. If you know they’re alone, maybe you can make a card or note to let them know you’re praying for them.  Pray that they feel God’s love and your love!

Advent Reading:

Do: Grab your candles either from your swag bag or a white or purple candle from around the house.

Say: Today we remember the first three candles of Advent — the candles of HOPE, PEACE, and JOY, and we light the fourth candle of Advent which represents LOVE.

Ask: What does love look like?

Do: Let them answer. Below are some examples.

Preschool Definition: Wanting the best for the people you care about.

Elementary Definition: an intense feeling or deep affection; purposeful commitment to sacrificial action for another.

Examples (if the kids get stuck): Love is patient. Love is kind. Love is how your moms and dads feel about you. Love is the feeling of sunshine hitting your face. Love is putting someone else’s needs before your own (thank you, Olaf). Jesus is love.

Say: As John wrote, “By this, we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” May God remind us this Christmas season how much we are loved by our Creator and that we are invited to live and walk in that love in everything we do. Teach us to love, O Lord, and may we be challenged to love others with the same love of Jesus that has been given to us. Amen.”

Do: Light the purple and white candles together.
